PETALING JAYA: The National Union of Newspaper Workers (NUNW) has inked its 15th collective agreement with Star Media Group Bhd.

This symbolised the ability of the union and the company to work together, said group managing director and chief executive officer Datuk Seri Wong Chun Wai.

“We have taken steps to make The Star leaner and reduce operating costs,” Wong said at Friday’s signing ceremony.

“We appreciate the union for understanding and supporting these initiatives.

“Development of human capital will be an important area.

“We urge union members to upgrade their skills to meet the new challenges.

“The company will provide the tools and training.”

Wong said that new digital products would be unveiled in the coming months, which could add revenue streams to Star Media Group.

NUNW deputy president G. Vijay Kumar said: “While the negotiation was tougher due to the challenging situation of print media, we managed to negotiate for fair and reasonable increments and other fringe benefits.”

Present at the signing was group chief operating officer Roy Tan.

The 2018-2020 collective agreement covers 330 non-executive workers, including those from the print, circulation, revenue and administration departments.
