Rising floodwaters wreaking havoc

Access of Kampung Sri Bayas villagers cut off

-

For 64 families in Kampung Sri Bayas in Setiu here, it has been a tough weekend as floodwaters kept rising – to 1.2m at one point.

Access was cut off when the Kampung Sri Bayas bridge connecting the village with other places was flooded, said Village Community Management Council chairman Wan Jais Mohamad.

“Residents are forced to use boats as a means of transport,” he said.

Kampung Sri Bayas is frequently flooded during monsoons.

Residents will be moved to SK Kampung Besut if water levels become dangerous.

Setiu Fire and Rescue Station chief Mustafa Ismail said three areas in Setiu were flooded.

“Other villages affected are Kampung Merbau Menyusut and Kampung Tok Randuk, Pelong,” he said.

In Tanah Merah, Kelantan, the state Health Department identified clinics and hospitals at risk of being affected by the floods.

State Health director Dr Zaini Hussin said: “Among the flood-risk locations are Kuala Krai, Gua Musang, Pasir Puteh and Pasir Mas.

“Operation of health centres in affected locations will be shifted if they are affected by the floods.”

Zaini said the department also instructed all its 14,211 staff in the state to be on standby.

“They’ll make the necessary logistics preparations, as well as identify patients in flood-prone areas.”

Zaini said several simulation exercises were also conducted with the cooperation of several agencies.
