Say hi to ‘Deadpool’ in Penang’s heritage enclave
GEORGE TOWN: “Deadpool” has been hanging around Armenian Street since early last month and welcoming tourists.
He usually leans against a lamppost and looks like he is brooding over something.
The matte black and deep red of his get-up offers surprising camouflage. Many tourists usually do not see him until they are right next to him.
They get a pleasant shock when he suddenly whips his arm out to offer a handshake.
But instead of superstar Ryan Reynolds, this Deadpool is played by Mohamad Syukur Mohd Patthi.
Deadpool is a 2016 American superhero film based on Marvel Comics’ character of the same name.
The film stars Reynolds as Wade Wilson/ Deadpool.
Mohamad Syukur, 24, sells laksa and rojak in Butterworth with his family at night. About a month ago, he bought a Deadpool costume for RM300 and has since been bitten by the cosplay bug.
“Instead of just having fun by myself, I wanted to spread the cheer to tourists. So, here I am in Armenian Street,” he added.
When tourists pose for selfies with him, they usually place their donations into a jar “Deadpool” has beside him.
Mohamad Syukur said hardly any money ever goes into the jar. “When there is, I hand it to a local orphanage.
“It’s not about the money. I enjoy cosplaying, but none of my friends or family members know I started this.
“I take the ferry over nearly every day and I come here by about 4pm. I cancel it if I think it’s going to rain, but the weather has been great now so I can come every day,” he added.
Mohamad Syukur has ordered another costume costing RM500 and soon, he will hang out as Kevin the Minion – a yellow-coloured character from the movie Despicable Me.
