Hong Nung and Tong Larm come good in Classic showdown

-

WONG Hong Nung and Jason Siw Tong Larm won the gross and nett titles at the 25th national finals of the Carlsberg Golf Classic held at the Palm Garden Golf Club in Putrajaya.

This was the culmination of qualifying rounds that stretched the length and breadth of the nation and a finale that was fun-filled.

Gross champion Hung Nung is no stranger to the game, having won the golf gold medal for Malaysia in the 1989 SEA Games before turning pro and then returning to the amateur ranks to win many other titles.

Hung Nung credited his success to his “never-give-up” attitude and which he said gave him an edge over his competitors especially at the challenging 17th and 18th holes, where he registered birdies.

“Winning the Carlsberg Classic is a feather in my cap made extra special in the 25th year of the tournament’s history.

“I feel honoured to play with the best of the best in Malaysia and earn the respect of my golfing peers in this national tournament,” he added.

Tong Larm said he was surprised to be crowned the nett champion having participated in the tournament for the first time.

The 13- handicapper said “careful putting” shaved off vital strokes in his game.

“The conditions were perfect today but the pin positions were tough. That said, golf is not just all about the fairways and greens, and I really enjoyed the fun. I look forward to joining the competition again next year.”

Carlsberg Malaysia managing director Lars Lehmann said this year the tournament delivered “more fun” on and off the course, making it more competitive yet also more enjoyable.

“Golfers could ‘pop a draught (beer) anywhere’ with Carlsberg Smooth Draught served on the day. For cider lovers, the Somersby Kombi pop-up bar quenched players’ thirst with Apple, Blackberry, Sparkling Rosé and Elderflower Lime flavours.”

“And with the continued support from the golfing community we are game to make Carlsberg Classic better in delivering #ProbablyTheBest experience in the years to come.”
