Understanding the roles of an actuary
HERIOT-Watt University Malaysia hosted an Actuarial Science Conference entitled “Actuary, Redefined” recently.
It was on the aspects of the actuarial role in various fields, including but not limited to data analysis and risk management.
It was also to educate future actuaries on the other possible non-traditional actuarial pathways, as well as shedding light on why actuaries play an essential part in different fields.
The expertise of an actuary is becoming more in demand in a multitude of fields. The role has subsequently expanded to become more diverse.
“The main inspiration behind our effort to organise this conference was to provide greater exposure for our fellow course mates to the ever-changing field of the actuarial industry.
“This includes the new opportunities that have emerged over the past decade, equipping them to be more competent in this era of data revolution,” said conference organising chairperson Seervina Kaur.
Seervina, together with her committee members, Teoh Hui Ying and Law Ying Cheng, are third year Actuarial Science students at Heriot-Watt University Malaysia.
The committee had organised an interesting itinerary for attending guests, which included a keynote speech, plenary talks, as well as panel discussions to facilitate the sharing of experiences and perspectives from leading members of the insurance industry.
“Guest speakers were invited to talk on a wide range of topics including traditional insurance, Insurtech and enterprise risk management (ERM).
“This was an excellent opportunity for students to explore the many potential future pathways ahead. “We believe everyone benefited greatly from this conference,” said Seervina.
The keynote presenter and guest of honour Ching Ing Chian, the appointed actuary for AIA Public Takaful, discussed the actuary’s journey in achieving actuarial fellowship, climbing the corporate ladder and the evolution of the industry.
The plenary talks covered “Where is the Current Actuarial Research Headed?” and “Actuarial Science: An Investment Banking Point of View”, while the panel dis- cussions were on “Wider Fields: Enterprise Risk Management & Business as Careers” and “How Will Insurtech Change the Insurance Industry in the 21st Century?”
