A cinematic learning experience
SINCE August, Golden Screen Cinemas (GSC) has held two special screenings for students in Johor Baru. In collaboration with Star Media Group (SMG), this junior movie club programme turns a trip to the cinema into a fun language learning experience.
The movie screenings of
Christopher Robin, held in August, and Goosebumps 2: Haunted Halloween, in October, culminated in much success. The upcoming movie, to be screened on Nov 10, is
The Nutcracker and the Four Realms.
In this Disney holiday film directed by Lasse Hallström and inspired by E.T.A. Hoffmann’s classic tale, the main character Clara (Mackenzie Foy) brings viewers into a strange and mysterious world.
It is there that Clara encounters a soldier named Phillip (Jayden Fowora-Knight), a gang of mice and the regents who preside over three Realms: Land of Snowflakes, Land of Flowers and Land of Sweets.
Clara and Phillip must brave the ominous Fourth Realm and its ruling tyrant, Mother Ginger, to return harmony to the unstable world.
The show features Keira Knightley as the Sugar Plum Fairy and a special performance by American ballet dancer Misty Copeland.
Like previous junior movie club screenings, it will be held at the 16-screen GSC Paradigm Mall Johor Baru multiplex. The movies, all based on English storybooks, are preceded by language activities and games.
GSC sponsored these special screenings as part of its corporate social responsibility, aiming to champion English literacy for schoolchildren as well as to give back to the society it operates in.
As a leading cinema operator in the country, GSC utilises its expertise in delivering excellent movie experiences to enhance students’ grasp on the world’s lingua franca. Motion pictures offer an enriching way to learn English, one in which non-native speakers get to see the language used in context.
GSC chief executive officer Koh Mei Lee said: “We hope that through this project, the younger generation will look to movies as a gateway to experiencing and learning English through conversation, delivery and performance.
“By working hand-in-hand with The Star, we can make learning English fun and exciting, by adding some dimension and depth to the educational approach that The Star is taking with its Newspaper-inEducation (NiE) programme.
This initiative is part of SMG’s English for Better Opportunities (EBO) project.
The EBO project is a multi-level platform aimed at making immersive-driven English language programmes interactive, fun and accessible to all. This project is an extension of SMG’s Star-NiE programme, which is now in its 21st year.
The screenings are exclusive to students from schools subscribing to Star-NiE. One guardian is also invited to accompany the participating student to the event.
Students from participating schools who are interested can contact Sundarrajan at 016-288 3682 for more information.
