Several areas in KL hit by flash floods after heavy rain

KUALA LUMPUR: Several areas and roads were flooded after almost two hours of heavy rain in the capital.

Kuala Lumpur City Hall enforcemen­t department director Azman Mahmood said the rain, which began at about 4pm yesterday, saw water rising in the tunnel heading from Jalan Tun Razak towards KLCC and Jalan Loke Yew.

He said several roads namely Jalan Wirawati, Jalan Pudu Ulu, Jalan Pudu Perdana, Jalan Cheras and Jalan Kepong were also affected by flash floods.

He said their personnel were deployed on the ground to help divert vehicles from affected routes.

“We also received reports of a surau in Hiliran Ampang People’s Housing Project being flooded, as well as fallen trees in Jalan Ampang.

“Our rescue squad and firemen are carrying out works to clean up the areas now,” he said when contacted by Bernama.

Meanwhile, the Wadda Gurdwara in Kampung Pandan and surroundin­g areas were also flooded, believed to be due to a highway constructi­on works nearby.

Rainwater gushed into the premises, including the prayer hall.

Later, volunteers gathered to help clean up the mess after the water receded.

Separately, five vehicles and their drivers were stuck in the Jalan Tun Razak tunnel.

The Fire and Rescue Department said they received a distress call at 5.56pm.

“Upon reaching the scene, we saw the drivers had climbed onto their car roofs.

“It took us about 10 minutes to bring them to safety. No one was hurt,” it said in a statement.

The situation returned to normal by late evening.

On social media, many shared a photo of a motorist sitting on his car, which was almost fully submerged in flood waters inside a tunnel.

Smart Tunnel on its Facebook clarified that the incident took place in a tunnel leading from Jalan Tun Razak to the KLCC carpark.
