Property developer Tan is a self-made businessman
PETALING JAYA: Property developer Datuk Tan Eng Boon, who was charged with bribing former Federal Territories Minister Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor in relation to a property project in Kuala Lumpur, is the chairman of the Johor Baru-based Joland group of companies.
Tan is a self-made businessman who started in agricultural activities before expanding his business to include property development and investment, hospitality and warehousing.
He made waves five years ago when he reportedly rented the viewing gallery of the eight-hectare S.E.A. Aquarium in Resorts World Sentosa, Singapore, to host the wedding of his son, Datuk Seri Edwin Tan. It was the first time the aquarium became the venue for a wedding.
According to a report in The Straits Times newspaper, which was picked up from Chinese evening daily Lianhe Wanbao, the wedding cost S$2mil (RM6.09mil).
The amount included a S$1.2mil (RM3.65mil) Lamborghini as a wedding gift for the couple.
According to its website, the Joland group began in 1990 and has over 50 subsidiaries. The group has developed several projects in Johor, including Grand Paragon Hotel and serviced apartments in Johor Baru.
Joland is also building a mixed development project in Kuala Lumpur known as the Paragon City Development, which comprises a shopping mall, serviced apartments and a five-star hotel.
