AF FIQ AND KEI TRIUMPH IN N ITALY
KUALA LUMPUR: Afiq Ikhwan Yazid made Malaysia proud by winning the Lamborghini Super Trofeo World Finals in Vallelunga, Italy.
Afiq partnered Kei Cozzolino of Japan to win a chaotic Race 1 in their Lamborghini Huracan car in 50:38.777 after starting from third on Saturday.
The pair, driving for Clazzio Racing, took the win at the iconic circuit located near Rome after their nearest rivals were struck with penalties.
Australians Ben Gersekowski-Richard Muscat of Leipert Motorsports took the second place ahead of teammates Niels LagrangeFrederik Schandorff of Belgium-Denmark.
Afiq-Cozzolino are also the first Asian team to win the World Finals, which gathers the top Lamborghini drivers from the Asian, Europe and American series.
The 27-year-old Afiq, who is from Kuala Lumpur, has yet to come to terms with what he has achieved in sportscar racing.
“Words can’t describe how I feel right now. I’ve been trying for the last few years to win the World Finals.
“We took over as the leader in my stint with five laps to go and I had a bit of luck on my side too,” said Afiq, who is a three-time winner of the Lamborghini Super Asia Series.
“It’s still taking time to sink in ... that an Asian team have beaten the rest of the world for the first time.
“I want to thank the crew and everyone who have been supportive with prayers and well wishes.”
A day earlier, the duo also won the last two rounds of the Lamborghini Super Trofeo Asia Series from pole position.
