Babysitter’s hubby charged with murder of 11-month-old infant

KAJANG: The husband of a babysitter has been charged with the murder of an 11-month-old infant under their care.

He is also expected to face additional charges linked to sexual abuse next week.

Yesterday, Hazmi Majid (pic), was accused of causing the death of Nur Muazara Ulfa Muhammad Zainal at a unit in Apartment Sri Cempaka, Section 16, Bandar Baru Bangi between 10.30am and 1.30pm on Nov 7.

There had been wide press coverage about the baby who died two days after being admitted to Serdang Hospital, allegedly after having been physically and sexually abused.

Hazmi, 36, a barber, was brought to the courtroom yesterday morning before magistrate Fadzilatul Isma Ahmad Refngah.

He faces a charge under Section 302 of the Penal Code, which carries a death sentence upon conviction.

Hazmi, who was unrepresented, was seen nodding his head when the charge was read out to him.

None of his family members were present. No plea was recorded and no bail was offered.

The plea would only be recorded at the High Court when the case is transferred there.

Deputy public prosecutor Faten Hadni Khairuddin then stood up and applied for a mention date pending chemist and DNA reports.

Fadzilatul Isma set Jan 17 for mention, pending the reports.

Hazmi is expected to face two charges under Section 377CA of the Penal Code for sexual connection by object at a Sessions Court here next Thursday.

Section 377CA provides a maximum of 30 years’ jail and whipping, if convicted.
