JOHOR BARU: Permaisuri Johor Raja Zarith Sofiah Almarhum Sultan Idris Shah officially opened the Tunku Laksamana Johor Haematology Ward at Hospital Sultanah Aminah (HSA) here.

The ward was named after Sultan Ibrahim Ibni Almarhum Sultan Iskandar’s and Raja Zarith Sofiah’s fourth child, the late Tunku Laksamana Johor Tunku Abdul Jalil Ibni Sultan Ibrahim. Tunku Jalil, 25, passed away on Dec 5, 2015, after battling liver cancer.

Johor Health Department director Dr Selahuddeen Abd Aziz said the idea to set up the Tunku Laksamana Hematology ward was mooted by Raja Zarith Sofiah.

He said the initiative was undertaken by the Tunku Laksama Johor Cancer Foundation which financed the renovation cost of the building as a conducive treatment centre for cancer patients.

Dr Selahuddeen said some 7,584 cancer patients had received daily treatment at the Haematology Daycare Centre and about 704 as in-patients at the ward in 2017.

“The Foundation has also provided financial help for patients’ medication,” he said.

Dr Selahuddeen said the renovation works of the building included upgrading the nurse’s counter, treatment room and lounge at the daily treatment unit.

He said the hospital’s haematology clinical services centre was set up in 2000 and used as a referral centre for blood-related diseases for the southern region currently.

Dr Selahuddeen said the centre also offered consultation and treatments to all public hospitals in Johor namely in Muar, Batu Pahat, Kluang, Mersing and Pontian.
