One City complex claims rioters thrashed premises

SUBANG JAYA: The joint management bodies (JMBs) for the One City complex at USJ 25 held a press conference claiming that their complex was attacked by rioters over a case of mistaken identity.

Spokesman Chong Li Loh said the building comprised 939 individual owners and was not owned by MCT Bhd or One City Development, a subsidiary of the former.

After a Monday pre-dawn attack on the Seafield Sri Maha Mariamman Temple, a second group of rioters had marched to MCT Tower, part of the One City Development and trashed the premises early Tuesday morning. Besides damag- ing the ground floor, the second group of rioters also set fire to vehicles parked nearby.

Chong yesterday said that both One City Development and MCT Bhd did not own the building, and MCT was merely a tenant with naming rights, hence the Skypark was named “MCT Tower”.

“It’s a misunderstanding because they see ‘MCT Tower’, and the development is also called ‘One City’, but we have no ties with One City Development Bhd,” Chong said.

He said consultants were still assessing the extent of the damage caused by the riot, but added that it was “significant”.

Besides the physical damage, Chong said there was also the issue of lost business and damaged brand.

“But now, it’s business as usual ... though our hope is that all of this will end soon,” Chong said.

He said that the JMBs had also not contacted the developer, nor had the developer contacted them.

As of yesterday, the place was still under heavy police presence, including Federal Reserve Units stationed at the One City complex itself.
