Wee Wern ends year with a flourish in S’pore
PETALING JAYA: After storming to her fifth title in less than six months, national squash player Low Wee Wern declared there is more to come from her next year.
The 28-year-old concluded her year with a bang by clinching the Singapore Open title after defeating Hong Kong’s second seed Lee Ka Yi with a 11-6, 11-5, 11-3 win on Saturday.
“It’s good to end the year on a high as it’s my last tournament for the year. It’s also really good to be back playing in Singapore,” said Wee Wern.
“It’s where I won my first Asian junior title 12 years ago, so I have many good memories here.”
It was the Malaysian’s latest prize after winning the Malaysian, Australian, Tasmanian and Queensland Opens since her comeback in July after recovering from a serious knee injury that saw her sidelined for 20 months.
Her world rankings have also seen a massive jump from 254th in July to 48th.
But despite her remarkable achievement from a long layoff, she has acknowledged that the tournaments she has won are smaller tour titles compared to the ones she is used to playing in when she was ranked fifth in the world.
At the Platinum level event – the Hong Kong Open two weeks ago, she was ousted in the first round.
“I did well by winning five of the six tournaments I have played this year but I could have done better at the Hong Kong Open,” she said.
“I wanted to fare better against the top players, so that will be the plan for next year.”
And with at least a month before she returns to competitive action next year, Wee Wern, whose ultimate goal is to reach world No. 1 one day, has already got down to work and is already planning on things to do during the break.
“I still have many things to work on to compete again at the top level, so I will sit down with my coach and physio to discuss what to work on in the off-season.”
“Among the things I need to work on are my strength, match fitness and shot precision. I still have a lot of areas to improve on for next year.”
