Respect the law, says IGP
KUALA LUMPUR: This Saturday’s anti-Icerd rally organisers and participants must keep the peace and respect the law, warns Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Mohamad Fuzi Harun.
Everyone’s safety was assured as long as the rally remained peaceful, he said.
“Those involved in the rally must do everything they can to hold a peaceful gathering. We hope that everyone will observe the rule of law during the rally. We do not want any untoward incident to occur.
“The police will be there to ensure the safety of the public is maintained,” he said.
“We will be prepared for any eventuality. We will monitor the situation to ensure that public order is not threatened.
“Kuala Lumpur City Hall has allowed the event to proceed.
“At the same time, the police will also issue our approval letter soon,” he told a press conference after presenting diplomas to Unikop college students at the Police Training College here yesterday.
Mayor Datuk Nor Hisham Ahmad Dahlan said DBKL only allowed the organiser to use an area in front of the Sultan Abdul Samad building in Jalan Raja as the location for the rally from 2pm to 6pm.
On investigations into the riots at the Seafield Sri Maha Mariamman Temple in USJ 25, the IGP said 83 men had been detained so far and police were looking for more sus- pects and witnesses.
On Monday, Bukit Aman CID distributed photographs of 28 witnesses wanted by the police to assist investigations into the incident.
Asked on the Cabinet’s decision to withdraw a moratorium on a number of preventive laws to handle the temple fracas, Mohamad Fuzi said police would uphold the rule of law.
“We will take action as we see fit to ensure the safety and security of the public is maintained,” he said.
