Unsavoury Maggi QR codes reported

-

PETALING JAYA: Nestle Malaysia has lodged a police report on what it says is an “unlawful attack by a third party” redirecting users who scan the QR code on some of its Maggi products to offensive content online.

The company said its attempts to contact the party involved was unsuccessful, prompting it to report the matter also to the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC).

“We consider this an extremely serious matter as Nestle Malaysia has a zero tolerance policy towards inappropriate and unlawful content,” a Nestle spokesman said in a statement.

“We are providing the authorities with our fullest cooperation to resolve this matter as soon as possible.”

A test scan of a QR code on a Maggi Hot Cup directed the web browser to a website by Mad Labs, with a warn- ing that it was a deceptive site that could trick users into installing malware or reveal private information.

The Mad Labs website says it is a technology-based R&D company with a focus on emerging web and mobile technology for marketing purposes.

Attempts to contact Mad Labs failed as the contact numbers and emails listed were either out of service or belonged to a company which claimed that it was a wrong number.

Maggi Malaysia urged customers to go direct to its website www.maggi.com.my for any information.

Those with queries can contact Nestle Consumer Services Centre at 1-800-88-3433.
