PETALING JAYA: Behind every successful man there is a woman and in world bowling champion Adrian Ang’s case, his wife and No. 1 fan, Ng Shin Yii (pic) is the main source with her undivided love, support and encouragement.

Being a former national top wushu exponent, Shin Yii knows how much it means for an athlete to conquer the world as she shares Adrian’s joy for winning the doubles event with Tun Hakim Tun Hasnul Azam at the Men’s World Championships in Hong Kong last Sunday.

Shin Yii, a taijiquan specialist, fell short twice in her bid for a world title, settling for silver in Toronto, Canada, in 2009 and bronze in Jakarta in 2015.

But Shin Yii was delighted that Adrian had now accomplished what she could not.

“I’m extremely happy that my husband had finally won his first gold after his sixth appearance at the world meet. The whole family is so proud of him,” said Shin Yii, a three-time SEA Games silver medallist.

“As an athlete, I have always dreamt of a day where I could stand on top of the world meet podium but it never materialised.

“And now he turned this dream into a reality!”

“As it’s a doubles event, I must thank his partner Tun Hakim, too, for realising this big ambition together.

“It’s not easy to be the best out of a hundred pairs of bowlers but they did it.”

Adrian, 31, and Shin Yii, 29, tied the knot in October 2015 and the couple have a 16-month-old daughter, Aurelea.

Adrian-Tun Hakim showed they were no pushovers against their more illustrious rivals who are all touring professionals on the US PBA Tour.

They thumped Canada’s Dan MacLelland-Francois Lavoie 458412 in the last four before outplaying Americans EJ Tackett-Andrew Anderson 433-370 to create history as the first Malaysian winners in the doubles.

They went one better than the silver medal finish by Alex Liew and Muhd Nur Aiman Khairuddin in Munich in 2010. The other gold was won by Rafiq Ismail in the singles, which ended Malaysia’s 39-year title drought.

The team will arrive home from Hong Kong today to a hero’s welcome after achieving their best-ever haul of two gold medals.
