Malaysia (UKM) vice-chancellor for a three-year term effective Jan 1,
2019.
He takes over from Prof Tan Sri
Dr Noor Azlan
Ghazali whose term ends at the end of December.
Prof Mohd
Hamdi , 47, previously served as Universiti Malaya deputy vice-chancellor (Academic Affairs and International) from 2011 to 2014.
Prof Mohd Hamdi who is from Muar, Johor, obtained his Bachelor of Engineering (Mechanical) from Imperial College in London, Master of Science in Advanced Manufacturing Technology and System Management from the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology and his PhD from Kyoto University in Japan. He is a professor at UM’s Faculty of Engineering Department of Mechanical Engineering.
The university in a statement said Education Minister Dr Maszlee Malik announced his appointment based on Section 12 (1) of UKM’s constitution.
Congratulating Prof Mohd Hamdi on his appointment, UKM board of directors chairman Tan Sri Abdul Wahid Omar said he believed his qualifications and wide experiences would help bring a new perpective to UKM and further improve its performance not just in terms of rankings but also in the development of its students, graduates’ marketability and reputation as a national university.
Abdul Wahid also thanked Prof Noor Azlan on his contributions during his tenure.
“UKM is now ranked at the 184th spot in the current QS World University Rankings compared to 269th position in 2013/4 when he first started his tenure in 2014,” he said.
Prof Noor Azlan has served two terms as vice-chancellor of the research university.
Welcoming Prof Mohd Hamdi’s appointment, Prof Noor Azlan called on all staff to give their support to the newly appointed vice-chancellor.
“UKM is our university and we are all responsible for it. Let us make this mission a success,” he added.
Since UKM was set up 48 years ago, it has been led by 11 vice-chancellors. They are Emeritus Prof Tan Sri Dr Mohd Rashdan Baba; Datuk Dr Ariffin Ngah Marzuki; Prof Datuk Dr Mohd Ghazali Abdul Rahman; Tan Sri Dr Anuwar Mahmud; Emeritus Prof Tan Sri Dr Awang Had Salleh; Prof Tan Sri Dr Abdul Hamid Abdul Rahman; Emeritus Prof Dr Mohd Sham Mohd Sani; Emeritus Prof Tan Sri Dr Anuwar Ali; Prof Tan Sri Dr Mohd Salleh Mohd Yasin; Prof Tan Sri Dr Sharifah Hapsah Syed Hasan Shahabudin and Prof Tan Sri Dr Noor Azlan Ghazali.
