Identifying options for school leavers

- By LEE CHONGHUI educate@thestar.com.my

DECIDING on what to do next after school ends is not an easy decision to make.

Visiting The Star Education Fair 2019 may help as it is known as a one-stop centre for students and their parents to obtain information about different courses and subjects as they decide on the next step. Exhibitors will brief visitors on a wide range of programmes and professional qualifications available. Education and career talks will also be held. The fair will be on Jan 5 and 6.

The Psychology Department at Cyberjaya University College of Medical Sciences (CUCMS) will be conducting a free Career – Personality Mapping Test at the fair to help students identify their ideal career options that match their personality and aspirations.

Faculty of Allied Health Sciences dean Dr Ahmad Fairuz Mohamed said the test, which is based on an industry accepted methodology, has been modified further by the psychology team to fit the needs of Form Five school leavers.

“To make the experience smooth and easy, students can access computer terminals that can analyse their responses and present their matching results.

“For those who want one-toone coaching or guidance, there will be six professional and experienced counsellors on hand who can advise them further,” he said.

Dr Ahmad Fairuz said the free career test and counselling session was a way for faculty members to contribute to society and help students who have completed their studies at school but have no idea what career they would like to pursue.

The Psychology Department is part of the Faculty of Allied Health Sciences at CUCMS.

The free Career – Personality Mapping Test at the CUCMS booths would be held over the two-day Star Education Fair.

More than 70 exhibitors attended the balloting session at Menara Star in Petaling Jaya on Wednesday to vie for strategic booths at the event.

The biggest exhibitors at the twoday event are Limkokwing University of Creative Technology

and International University of Malaya-Wales, with 18 booths each.

Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI) and University College Dublin (UCD) Malaysia Campus (RUMC) and Education in Ireland will be sharing a combined 18 booths.

Asia Pacific University, Brickfields Asia College (BAC), HELP University, KDU Universitiy

College, Quest International University Perak and the University of Nottingham Malaysia are the second largest exhibitors, taking 16 booths each.

HELP University senior manager Raymond Munesinghe said the fair is a good platform for institutions to introduce new programmes.

“Those who register during the fair will receive a registration rebate on their tuition fees,” he said.

KDU University College enrolment services manager Jess Lee Chai Ling encouraged school-leavers to visit the fair to pick the different types of programmes available.

She added that students who sign up with KDU during the fair could receive special promotions such as fee waiver for foundation programmes, diploma and degree courses.

BAC marketing manager Jayaceva Das said the education fair enables school-leavers to do their “shopping” before they make a final decision on what to pursue next.

Booths are available for interested exhibitors.
