PUTRAJAYA: A photograph taken of Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad soon after he was sworn in as Prime Minister was sold for RM500,000 at the Pakatan Harapan charity dinner here.

The photograph of Dr Mahathir with five other Pakatan leaders taken on May 10 before he held his first press conference as Prime Minister was one of six pictures that were auctioned off to raise funds for the coalition to hold their political activities.

Another photograph of Dr Mahathir taken on his first day in the Prime Minister’s Office on May 23 was auctioned for RM350,000.

“I think I want to resign and take photographs of myself and sell them since they fetch quite a high price,” he said in jest.

Dr Mahathir, who is Pakatan chairman, reminded Pakatan members as well as their Sabah partner Parti Warisan Sabah that they were elected by the people because of their clean and corrupt-free image.

“So, I remind you to remain clean, not to accept bribery and indulge in corruption.

“If we can do this, we can remain in power after the 15th general election,” he added.

“If we are dirty and corrupt, we will be defeated by the people. Nothing good comes out of corruption,” he said at the dinner last night.

The event managed to collect about RM2mil from the sale of tables and auction of photographs.

Leaders of other Pakatan component parties also attended the dinner.

PKR president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said Pakatan leaders must tackle the people’s issues wisely.

He pointed out the need for Pakatan to resolve issues concerning all Malaysians, including the Malays.

“We must respond positively to the people and convince them that no one is sidelined, ignored and that no issues concerning them are too trivial,” he said.

Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said the anti-Icerd rally in Kuala Lumpur on Saturday was held without any untoward incident, and the Pakatan government respects the people’s right to voice their opinions.

“Pakatan’s direction is clear, which is to uphold the law and give people their voice to state their views,” he said.

Parti Amanah Negara president Mohamad Sabu said it is time for the party and Pakatan to fulfil their promises to the people.

DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng said there are indications that the economy is on the road to recovery and that the promises, including getting rid of the GST, had been fulfilled.
