Tragedy strikes newly-weds and kin a month after wedding

ROMPIN: A month ago, Mohamad Syahmi Emir Mohd Rawi and Nur Diana Afifah Hasnulhady were married. But tragedy struck when they both died in a traffic accident along with their nieces.

The newly-weds, both accountants aged 24, were killed on the spot after a collision between their car and an express bus at the 131.2km of Jalan Kuantan-Johor Baru at about 1.50am yesterday.

Rompin OCPD Deputy Supt Azli Mohd Noor said the other two fatalities were the couple’s nieces – Yasmin Afiqah Hazemi, 14, and Yasmin Aliah Hazemi, 12.

He said Mohamad Syahmi Emir was driving from Kuantan to Johor Baru. The couple are said to be heading to Mersing, Johor, to send their nieces home after a holiday in Teluk Chempedak, Kuantan.

Mohamad Syahmi Emir is believed to have lost control of his car when it veered into an oncoming lane and collided with the bus.

The impact caused the car to be dragged for about 30m before both vehicles landed in a ditch.

DSP Azli said the bus driver and 30 passengers escaped unhurt.

“It is learnt that the couple were married only a month ago,” he said.

The bodies were sent to Rompin Hospital for a post-mortem.

In another accident at the 164km of the East Coast Expressway in Maran on Saturday, a bus driver and three passengers were injured when the vehicle crashed into the rear of a trailer.

Maran OCPD Deputy Supt Norzamri Abd Rahman said the accident occurred at 9.24pm when the bus was on its way to Kuantan from Klang.

The bus driver and the injured passengers were sent to the Maran health clinic for treatment.
