Hospitalised fireman can now move eyes and hands
KUALA LUMPUR: Fireman Muhammad Adib Mohd Kassim, who was seriously injured during a recent temple fracas, is now conscious and able to move his eyes and hands, said Zuraida Kamaruddin.
The Housing and Local Government Minister added, however, that Muhammad Adib was still listed as “critically ill”.
“I spoke to his family and they are following the doctors’ advice to put him back on the veno-venous extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) system.
“I urge all Malaysians to pray for Muhammad Adib’s speedy recovery,” she said after paying him a visit at the National Heart Institute (IJN) yesterday.
Zuraida said he needed more time to recover and that his condition was “much better” than when she visited him earlier.
In a statement, IJN said Muhammad Adib had suffered progressive deterioration of his lung function in the last 24 hours.
It said a thorough assessment showed signs of consolidation and hardening of the lung tissue, thus making gas exchange ineffective.
“This is due to his severe initial lung injury. At the same time, his renal function has also not improved and requires dialysis support,” it said.
In view of this, IJN said it was decided that the veno-venous ECMO system would be reinserted on Saturday to assist in Muhammad Adib’s respiratory requirements.
On Nov 27, he was allegedly beaten up by several people during the riots near the Seafield Sri Maha Mariamman temple as a result of a dispute over its proposed relocation.
