Leadership urged to reject Nurul Izzah’s resignation

KOTA KINABALU: Kota Belud PKR chief Mustapha Sakmud is appealing to the party’s central leadership to reconsider Nurul Izzah Anwar’s resignation as PKR vice-president and Penang chief.

Mustapha said the Permatang Pauh MP was among the new leaders with the potential for a great future in politics.

“We fought so hard to make sure she won in the recent party election.

“She has so much to contribute,” he said, describing the criticism by PKR central committee member Latheefa Koya on the president’s decision as “quite harsh”.

Latheefa said there was “cronyism and nepotism” in the recent appointment of state leaders by Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and that the appointments were “disturbing and a cause for grave concern”.

Mustapha said the lawyer should be fair when making her statement as Nurul Izzah’s appointment was based on her merits and contributions to the party.

“Her contributions are far more important and significant than family tie issues,” he said.

He also called on Nurul Izzah to rethink her decision as the current political situation required capable leaders.

“We need leaders who can lead, handle situations and instil a sense of confidence in the government among the rakyat,” he said.

Mustapha added that instead of bowing to pressure, Anwar should take action against troublemakers and those who did not respect the voice of the majority.
