MIRI: The work goes on for the Fire and Rescue Department despite a fallen comrade.

The department’s Air Wing Unit here managed to fly out an injured Japanese tourist from Mount Mulu after it had to abort the first attempt the day before due to low visibility.

Miri Fire and Rescue chief Supt Law Poh Kiong said the team on its second day of rescue took off from Mulu airport at 7.10am yesterday.

Some 50 minutes later, it managed to rescue Akihiro Sado, 25, from Mount Mulu.

“The team successfully winched him up from the site on Mount Mulu.

“The helicopter flew him to the Miri Hospital,” said Supt Law.

The Star saw the helicopter touch down at the Miri Hospital landing pad at about 8.40am.

The first aerial rescue mission had to be aborted at about 3.30pm on Monday due to low visibility.

Sado had fallen at Camp 4 of Mount Mulu, located deep in interior northern Sarawak late Saturday night.

Initial information received by the Marudi fire station, which is the closest to Mulu, was that Sado had hurt himself at about 9pm while climbing the mountain with other foreign tourists.

The fire station then alerted the Air Wing Unit.

The incident is said to have taken place at a site about 1,820m above sea level with Sado suffering hip and backbone injuries.
