Three jailed and fined over false claims totalling RM4,200

JOHOR BARU: Three individual­s including a woman pleaded guilty at the Sessions Court here to making false claims totalling RM4,200 to two government agencies several years ago.

In the first case, contractor Mohamad Rizal Abu, 36, pleaded guilty before judge Kamarudin Kamsun to a charge of submitting a false claim worth RM1,200 to the Segamat Health Office in 2016.

The accused had submitted an invoice on July 18 for a water piping work which he claimed was carried out on June 3 the same year.

He was charged under Section 18 of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission Act 2009 and Section 24 of the same act which provides for imprisonme­nt of up to 20 years and a fine of up to RM10,000 if found guilty.

Kamarudin sentenced Mohamad Rizal to seven days’ jail and fined him RM10,000 in default six months’ imprisonme­nt.

In the second case, contractor Syed Azrol Affandi Syed Rahmad, 32, and former government servant, Norhazra Jamil, 34, pleaded guilty to a charge of making false claims amounting to RM3,000 to the Segamat Youth and Sports Developmen­t office in 2015.

Syed Azrol had made the claims on Nov 19 and Nov 28 for an art crafting class and agricultur­al workshop which he did not organise while Norhazra had aided and abetted him when she submitted the claims to the adminis- trative officer.

They pleaded guilty to an alternativ­e charge under Section 417 of the Penal Code for cheating which carries a jail term of five years or a fine or both upon conviction.

Kamarudin sentenced Syed Azrol Affandi to seven days’ jail and fined him RM10,000 fine in default six months’ jail while Norhazra, who is now a full-time housewife, to 14 days’ jail and fined her RM20,000 in default 12 months’ imprisonme­nt.
