-

KUALA LUMPUR: A former manager at U-Mobile was sentenced to five years in jail by a Sessions Court here after she pleaded guilty to embezzling almost RM1.3mil of the telco company’s daily cash collection.

Asmira Ariffin, 42, admitted to committing criminal breach of trust (CBT) in her capacity as the then money collection department manager.

According to the first charge, she committed CBT over a sum of RM720,005.40 and RM570,753.50 in the second charge.

The total amount that went missing from the coffers was RM1,290,758.90.

Both offences were committed at U-Mobile Sdn Bhd, Berjaya Times Square in Jalan Imbi here between Aug 18, 2015, and April 21, 2017.

The charges under Section 408 of the Penal Code carry a maximum jail term of 14 years and with whipping and fine upon conviction.

DPP Norashikin Ibrahim pushed for a sentence that would serve as a lesson to the accused.

Lawyer Zulkefli Omar, who represented Asmira, however asked for a lenient sentence on grounds that his client did not have a prior conviction.

She is a single mother of five aged between 10 and 18. “She is remorseful and promised not to repeat her mistake,” he said.

Sessions Court judge Zamri Bakar sentenced Asmira to five years in jail for each of the offences.

He ordered the jail time to run concurrently from the date of sentencing.
