Foreigner injured while escaping Immigration officers

-

NIBONG TEBAL: A Myanmar national in his 20s injured his face after falling while trying to escape Immigration officers who were trying to nab him.

The man, believed to be an illegal immigrant, suffered a cut on his forehead and was bleeding during the incident at a paperrecycling factory.

State Immigration director Meor Hezbullah Meor Abd Malik said the man was among 14 foreigners rounded up in an operation by the department yesterday.

Ten Myanmar nationals, four Chinese nationals including two women, all in their 20s to 40s, were picked up for not having valid documents and abusing their work permits.

He said the department would also investigate how the Chinese nationals were found to be holding expatriate passes.

“We have also detained a female managing director, aged 24, and a male factory manager, aged 44, to facilitate investigations,” he told reporters at the factory site yesterday.

The raid was carried out by the Penang Immigration Department, assisted by the Kedah Immigration Department and the Penang Labour Department.

“Initial investigations show that the foreigners were working at the factory for more than a year,” he said, adding that they were taken to the State Immigration Department’s headquarters in Seberang Jaya for further investigations.

It was learnt that the foreigners were paid RM50 per day and were required to work 12 hours per day at the factory, which has been in operation for the past six years.
