-

AN outbreak of African swine fever has hit Guangdong province, Oriental Daily reported.

The Chinese Agriculture and Rural Affairs Ministry has so far confirmed 97 cases of African swine fever in 23 provinces.

China is the world’s largest pork supplier, consumer and importer. The country produced 702 million pigs in 2017, according to official data.

> The daily also reported a woman named Chung from Ipoh was cheated of RM50,000 after she was led to believe that her MyKad was used in money laundering activities.

She said she received a call from the post office to collect a parcel containing her MyKad and credit card.

Chung, 69, said she did not apply for any credit card and that her MyKad was with her.

The caller said her MyKad could have been used for money laundering and suggested she contact a policeman whose number was provided.

She called the policeman and was told that police records showed her bank account was involved in money laundering.

She also received a photo of the “arrest warrant” against her.

“I panicked when I saw the warrant. The ‘police officer’ asked me to transfer money to a bank account to declare all my assets were in order to clear my name,” she said.

The “police officer” also warned that she would be arrested if she did not follow his orders.
