Doubles pair Aaron-Wooi Yik show biggest progress this year

-

PETALING JAYA: If a poll is taken to determine the most improved badminton players, it will surely go to Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik.

While the seniors have stagnated, Aaron-Wooi Yik have shown the biggest progress this year – and that is only the tip of the iceberg!

The world No. 22 are currently ranked second in the national team – just seven rungs lower than Rio Olympic Games silver medallists Goh V Shem-Tan Wee Kiong.

Aaron is happy that he has got off to a good start with Wooi Yik this year, but is eager to achieve more.

He said they were aiming to take their game a notch higher in the new season and increase their chances of winning tickets for the Olympic Games in Tokyo in 2020.

“Our memorable outing this year was the World Championships – it has given us so much of confidence going forward,” said Aaron.

Aaron-Wooi Yik made heads turn when they reached the quarter-finals in their debut world meet in Guangzhou, China.

“We want to approach the New Year with a new mindset. We’ll continue to discuss with our coaches and find ways to improve,” said Aaron, who made his debut at the Thomas Cup Finals in Bangkok, Thailand, this year.

“The Malaysian men’s doubles department are in a transition, where many juniors are making the grade to the senior league.

“I’m glad that our senior players are helping us a lot to fast-track our progress.

“I’m positive that the men’s doubles will continue to produce results for Malaysia. I have that trust.”

They have reached three finals in the Vietnam International Challenge, Malaysian International Challenge and Saarlorlux Open in Germany this year and will be out to continue their good run when they take part in the Malaysian Masters at the Axiata Arena in Bukit Jalil from Jan 15-20.
