Help seniors get jobs

- JOBLESS Petaling Jaya

WHETHER it is ignorance or want of knowledge on my part, can anyone enlighten me if there is any job recruitment agency, institution or website that caters to a 64-year-old who is in dire need of a job to earn a decent living?

Our honourable Prime Minister, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, quipped not long ago that if one is mentally and physically able and also has the motivation to work, one should endeavour to do so.

This coming from a 93-year-old whom I first interviewed at Sri Perdana in 1992 when he graciously hosted a lunch for the victorious 1992 Thomas Cup.

I was a sports reporter for a daily newspaper then.

I wish I could approach Tun for a job now but that is wishful thinking. However, I have been earnestly seeking a job over the last few years but to no avail. I am sure there are numerous retirees out there who are in the same predicament.

Popular responses to earlier interviews went like the following:

> Sorry our retirement age is 60.

> You are overqualified for the job.

> Going by your resume you could be my boss.

It has been disappointing to say the least, especially since I am also prepared to take a pay cut. All we retirees need is a job. I hope someone will be able to shed some light on how we can resolve our woes to usher in a better new year.
