PETALING JAYA: Malaysian badminton fans are accustomed to watching Chan Peng Soon and Goh Liu Ying playing together but it was a whole different scenario in the SS Purple League.

The mixed doubles pair faced off against each other when their clubs Ampang Jaya BC (AJBC) and Puchong United BC (PUBC) clashed in the Stage One of the league on Wednesday.

Reigning champions PUBC were stunned by AJBC 9-6 on Wednesday night as the Ampang based club stamped their mark in the league. World number one Kento Momota (pic) stamped his class over Hong Kong’s Lee Cheuk Yiu with the Japanese easily winning the match 11-8, 11-4, 11-4.

Malaysia women’s singles player Goh Jin Wei continued AJBC’s winning streak with a convincing 11-7, 11-7, 11-3 win over Ho Yen Mei.

PUBC’s Tan Boon Heong-Tee Ee Yi reduced the deficit with a 11-9, 11-7, 11-8 win over Lim Tze JianLukhi Apri Nugroho in the men’s doubles.

The highlight of the day was the face-off between Liu Ying and Peng Soon and it was the former who came off victorious as she and Tang Chun Man beat Peng Soon-Shevon Lai Jemie 11-9, 11-9, 11-10 in an enthralling tie to pull level at 6-6 at that point.

Tan Jia Wei proved to be the hero for AJBC after beating PUBC’s Goh Giap Chin 11-5, 11-7, 11-7 to give the Ampang club a 9-6 win.

With their third consecutive victory, AJBC, who are gunning for their maiden title, are the only team with a 100% record.

Yesterday, Bukit Mertajam All Stars BC (BMASBC) thrashed Serdang BC (SBC) 12-5 as Lucas Corvee, Agrippina Primarahmanto Putera-Tiara Rosalia Noraidah and Riyanto Subagja proved to be the toast of the team after winning their matches in straight games.

Participating teams will be competing in three stages in a single round-robin format and playoff format for the title.

The total prize money this season is RM1.5mil. The Finals is scheduled at Genting Highlands from Jan 24-27.
