PORT DICKSON: A morning drizzle did not dampen the spirits of Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim when launching a campaign to keep five popular beach stretches here clean.

The Port Dickson MP said he wanted to instil a culture among locals to keep beaches, which are the main attractions to the resort town, clean at all times.

“Bersih, bersih, bersih ... that is the new culture I wish to introduce here,” he said in his speech when launching the Coastal Clean-up Day programme at Pantai Cahaya Negeri near here.

Anwar said he was heartened to see a good turnout including artistes such as Jasmin Hamid, Awi Rafael, Puteri Aishah, Atikah Suhaime and Sharnaaz Ahmad at yesterday’s programme.

Separately, Anwar said he had asked authorities here not to approve any major projects before a new Port Dickson structural plan is approved.

He said this was to prevent haphazard planning and to ensure the necessary infrastructure was in place before such projects are carried out.

Anwar also said the frequent flooding in Port Dickson needs to be addressed.

“If we want to turn PD into a top tourism destination, we can’t be having floods here every week,” he said.

Anwar said he raised the matter with the district office and was told that several rivers in the area need to be deepened and the drainage system upgraded.

Anwar said he had also raised this with Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng who has promised to help out.

“The minister told me he can’t

focus on PD alone but he will surely look into it,” he added.

Yesterday’s programme was co-organised by the state government, Tourism Ministry, Port

Dickson Municipal Council, district office and SWM Environment Sdn Bhd at Pantai Saujana, Pantai Tanjung Gemuk, Pantai Teluk Kemang and Pantai Tanjung Biru.
