June Wei subdues Corvee to send Petaling BC on top of standings

PETALING JAYA: National men’s singles shuttler Cheam June Wei (pic) prevailed in a thrilling encounter against Frenchman Lucas Corvee to send Petaling Badminton Club to the top of the SS Purple League (SSPL) standings.

It was an upset of sorts as world No. 85 June Wei stunned world No. 46 Corvee 7-11, 11-8, 2-11, 11-5, 11-9 in the fifth and final tie for Petaling BC to win 13-7 at the Gem In Mall in Cyberjaya.

Thanks to the three-game win by June Wei, Petaling BC are level with defending champions Puchong United BC on 45 games won but the former are in the top position for having more points.

Petaling BC have picked up 700 points, 15 more than Puchong United BC.

It was Petaling BC’s only second win in the league after they whipped Bandar Maharani BC 15-4.

They lost in their two previous outings to Kepong BC (8-10) and Ampang Jaya BC (9-10).

Petaling BC started with all guns blazing yesterday with wins from Chong Yee Han in the first men’s singles, Yulia

Yosephine Susanto (women’s singles) and Goh V Shem-Man Wei Chong to give them a commanding 9-2 lead.

Terry Hee-Lai Pei Jing then stole a game in their 11-8, 9-11, 10-11, 10-11 defeat to Angrippina Prima RahmantoJi­n Yujia before June Wei handed Petaling BC a massive boost by topping the league at the halfway stage.

There will be four more matches left for all the eight teams before the top six progress into the second round.
