NATIONAL badminton champion Lee Shun Mei has joined the University of Nottingham Malaysia foundation in a Business and Management programme leading to an undergraduate programme in computer science.

Lee received a scholarship from the Tengku Ahmad Rithauddeen Badminton Scholarship in a collaboration between the university and Ampang Jaya Badminton Centre (AJBC).

“I started playing badminton when I was nine.

“My dad used to take my younger brother for professional badminton training, as he wanted to encourage him to do some exercise.

“I accompanied them once and that was when my passion for badminton started,” said Lee.

Her younger brother is studying at the Bukit Jalil Sports School in Kuala Lumpur.

Lee, 19, has had several achievements on the courts.

She feels that it is important for students to have a healthy mind and body, and sports is a great way to achieve this.

She believes that it is through sports that students create a better future for themselves.

University of Nottingham Malaysia Sports Complex manager Muhammad Affendi Faizal said, “For the past few years, the Nottingham badminton club has been a platform for students to participate in general activities.”

It has also hosted internal and external intervarsity tournaments.

“I am confident that Lee is able to contribute her skills and knowledge as a high-performing badminton player to our badminton club and the university team,” he said.

Lee likes to watch drama serials and listens to music when she is free. She continues to play badminton twice a week at the university with members of the institution’s badminton team.

Her badminton idols are Datuk Lee Chong Wei, Lin Dan and Kevin Sanjaya.

“I am very grateful to have been given the opportunity to study under a scholarship, which also values my talents and interest in badminton.

“I will do my very best to get good grades while I continue to play badminton. I am certain I will do well with the support of my family and friends,” she said.

Lee said she is looking forwarding to representing the university in upcoming tournaments.
