Johor cops hope to collect RM5mil in unpaid fines
ISKANDAR PUTERI: Johor police aim to collect more than RM5mil in unpaid traffic fines by giving a 50% discount to motorists, says state Traffic Enforcement and Investigation Department chief Supt Razak Md Said.
He said the police had received positive feedback from the public.
“We started the campaign in July in Segamat.
“As of Saturday, we have collected RM4.8mil.
“The number of motorists turning up to pay the fines is encouraging,” he said during the campaign at Mydin Mall here yesterday.
Supt Razak said some of the fines even went as far back as 19 years ago.
“One motorist paid up to RM10,000 in backdated fines after getting the 50% discount,” he said.
He said the campaign would continue at three other districts.
On a separate matter, Iskandar Puteri OCPD Asst Comm Dzulkhairi Mukhtar said motorcycle theft had increased by 65 cases this year compared to 336 cases recorded from January to Dec 29 last year.
“Most of the victims are those working in Singapore, where they leave their motorcycles and use public transport to go to the island republic.
“Motorcyclists should be more careful and use extra locks when they leave their vehicles behind,” he said.
