Najib confident BN will retain Cameron Highlands seat

PEKAN: Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak is confident that Barisan Nasional will retain Cameron Highlands in the Jan 26 by-election.

The former premier and Barisan chairman said his prediction was based on the current mood of the people, who were disappointed with the Pakatan Harapan government, which he claimed had failed to fulfil their election promises.

“It could be a major factor for voters to reject them. We have a good chance of defending the par- liamentary seat.

“If the Barisan machinery uses the right strategy, then there will be no problem for us to win,” he said after presenting school aid to students at SM Agama Tengku Ampuan Fatimah yesterday.

The event was organised by the Pahang Foundation and the Office of the Pekan MP.

The Cameron Highlands seat fell vacant after the Election Court nullified the victory of Datuk C. Sivarraajh after it established that there had been vote-buying by Barisan during the election campaign.

The Election Commission has set Jan 12 for nomination.

On another matter, Najib, who is Pekan MP, rebuked DAP adviser Lim Kit Siang who said that the previous government had not helped the orang asli.

He said the allegations were not true and intended to mislead the people, especially the orang asli community in Cameron Highlands, because “Barisan had helped the community across the country”.

“I personally launched the relocation of the Sungai Ruil orang asli village in Cameron Highlands. We can see how comfortable they are in their new houses now.

“There were many more plans to help the community and we had to look at the geographical factors of their settlements.

“Some are far and in the interior and would take time to implement,” he said. — Bernama
