Cooking oil reward for keeping streets clean

A ROAD cleaning company from Xin Cheng District in Xi’an, China, has a unique way of discouraging smokers from discarding cigarette butts on the street – by rewarding them with cooking oil.

Sin Chew Daily reported that 600g of cigarette butts (about 2,000 cigarette butts) can be exchanged for a litre of cooking oil worth 15 yuan (RM8.98).

The ongoing campaign started on Dec 26 and 21kg of cigarette butts have been collected so far.

The cigarette butts are disposed of by the road cleaning company.

The campaign also sparked an online debate with most netizens supporting the move, while others wanted those caught throwing cigarette butts on the street to get heavier penalties.

It was a rather uncharacteristic comment from Jackie since he had been asked about his son’s relationship with Ou-yang before and he seemed to approve of the romance.

The comment has given rise to a joke circulating online on whether Jackie will disown his son after disowning his daughter Etta Ng.
