PETALING JAYA: The Squash Racquets Association of Malaysia (SRAM) are scouting for a new head coach following the resignation of Peter Genever (pic).

Genever will be leaving the national set-up on Feb 28 after serving for seven years since 2012, which saw him overseeing the rise of several junior wall bashers.

“We had a meeting with National Sports Council (NSC) director-general Datuk Ahmad Shapawi Ismail on Monday and he has given us the green light to get a new head coach,” said SRAM) director Major (Rtd) S. Maniam yesterday.

“We will advertise for the position and we do hope to get a replacement as soon as March 1. In the meantime, Peter’s assistant Ajaz (Azmat) will be the caretaker coach.

“We’re looking for a coach who understands the coaching philosophy with sound theoretical abilities, who’s a good team player and can work with top players.”

Maniam thanked Genever for his contributions and said the national body’s coaching wing will miss him and wish him well in his future endeavours.

“He had a special rapport with the senior players whom he works closely with and has earned the respect of all players in the squad.

“His fellow coaches speak highly of him and he’s always there to lend a helping hand,” added Maniam.

“I found Peter to be meticulous and articulate when conducting his lessons at all training sessions. He was easy to work with, cooperative, amenable and extremely knowledgeable in his field.”

The 45-year-old Genever had expressed his gratitude to SRAM, NSC and the National Sports Institute (NSI) for their support and opportunities given to him over the last seven years.

He said he’s going back home to spend more time with his family and has no immediate plans yet.

“I think SRAM are doing well with the juniors coming up, so I believe it’s the right time for me to leave. I hope the players keep improving and reach their potential,” he said.
