If you think his thesis is good, it may not be his
While a Master’s student is out having fun, his thesis is getting done by writing service providers he has sourced on social media – for a fee that can come up to RM14,000 or more. While fellow students say the practice is unfair and unethical, one lawyer is calling it a crime.
PETALING JAYA: There’s no excuse to hire someone to write your Master’s thesis or PhD dissertation, said university students.
Nivashieni Saravana Ganesalingam, a first year medical student at UCSI University, said students who do this have a procrastination problem.
“Language is not a barrier to complete your thesis because you can always get help from your English lecturer or your friends,” she said.
She added that university students get a sufficient amount of time to finish their thesis.
“It is their procrastination problem which causes them to buy their thesis or ask others to do it for them in the end.”
Darren Lee, a first year engineering student at Monash University, said people who hire others to do their paper lack not just skill but credibility.
“They should learn to be independent and finish their own work.
“If this practise becomes a habit, sooner or later, especially when they enter the work force, they may not be able to perform up to par,” said Lee.
Wong Sook Wei, a second year history student at the National University of Singapore, said students who hire others to write their papers should realise the repercussions of their actions.
Wong said such actions were unfair to the other students who put in the effort to produce their own work.
“Why are undergraduate students unable to muster up the confidence to write their own theses?
“Are they just plain lazy, or has the education system failed to equip them with the skills necessary to write a thesis?,” Wong asked.
Albert Lim, a final year chemical engineering student from the University of Nottingham Malaysia, said students must be responsible to do all of their own work.
“It is genuinely unfair to have someone doing it for you because it is almost equivalent to buying your degree instead of earning it through hard work.”
