Guard Jonathan ready to fit into any system to lift Dragons

KUALA LUMPUR: With or without the ball, Westports Malaysia Dragons guard Jonathan Wong’s main concern is to make the team better.

The Singaporean import gave his best performance of the Asean Basketball League (ABL) season to inspire the Dragons to a thrilling 89-84 win over CLS Knights Indonesia at the Maba Stadium here on Thursday.

The 21-year-old showed glimpses of brilliance to drive to the basket for the finish and also be the playmaker at the point guard position.

He ended the night with 22 points, five rebounds and three assists to end the Dragons’ six-game losing streak – improving to a 6-9 (winloss) record in the ABL season.

For Jonathan, he’s happy to play on or off the ball as long as he can help his team to wins.

“I prefer to play with the ball as I’m more of a go to guy but I like to learn to fit into all sorts of systems and this is what great players do,” said Jonathan.

“So I’m trying to learn how to make my team and myself look good with or without the ball.”

Dragons head coach Jamie Pearlman said that when Jonathan is at his best, he gives new options in attack for the team.

“Having Jon come in and have games like that really gives us great flexibility and versatility to play in different ways, so he’s a real asset to the team,” said Pearlman.
