Nicol touched by well wishes from admirers

PETALING JAYA: After being shown so much love from her fans and fellow profession­als from around the world, Malaysian squash legend Datuk Nicol David ( pic) has not forgotten to show appreciati­on for her admirers.

The 35-year-old was overcome by the kind and warm messages .

“After announcing my retirement I have had responses like I have never had before and it has just been flowing in from all over Malaysia, beyond, and the world of squash,” said Nicol.

“I am very touched by everyone’s comments and wishes for me and it has been an overwhelmi­ng experience to hear such beautiful words from all.”

She assured Malaysians that she has not forgotten the love that has been shown to her and that foremost in her mind is every intention to return it to the community.

“Just to remind everyone that this is a very happy time and know that I will always have squash and Malaysian sports in my heart by giving back in more ways than one.

“Thank you again everyone for the love and support through your messages sent!”

She also thanked The Star for the coverage on her retirement saying: “And thank you for covering the exclusive interview with me too.”

Nicol is now in Chicago and is focusing all her attention on carrying the Malaysian flag high once more at the World Championsh­ips from Feb 23 to March 2 before she calls time on her career.

She will retire from an illustriou­s profession­al career which has seen her breaking numerous records, winning eight world titles and an unpreceden­ted reign of 109 consecutiv­e months at the top of the world rankings.

Nicol has also won 81 profession­al titles, and for her achievemen­ts, has been voted as the greatest female squash player of all time by squash fans and her peers.

Competing for the coveted world title are her fellow national teammates, former world No. 5 Low Wee Wern and Rachel Arnold.

And in the men’s draw are winners of the Asian Games team gold medal Nafiizwan Adnan, Ivan Yuen and Ng Ean Yow.
