Just do what is right for progress

I WOULD like to give my input to the members of the Economic Action Council (EAC) for their consideration.

Tourism is the fastest way to jump-start the economy as it brings in foreign visitors, thus currency. Sports tourism could be an option. Since we are on friendlier terms with the Japanese now, we can request for the Japan Super GT to be held in Malaysia.

Another sport which is popular with the Japanese is car drifting. This sport involves a lot of tweaking of engines and automotive parts to get the best performance from the car. This may also provide some stimulation for the supply chain of automotive parts that our Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad has envisaged.

In previous years, the construction industry was used to pump- prime the economy but it seems to have backfired due to corruption. One of the reasons for the overhang in properties is the high prices which make them unaffordable to many. This is a retribution of sorts and the construction industry must have the resolve to clean itself up; don’t give and don’t take corrupt money.

There are many calls to restore investors’ confidence but this can only be achieved if judgement can be passed on those guilty of making Malaysia infamous worldwide as soon as possible.

Another way to stimulate the domestic economy is to encourage domestic spending. Some of us may want to replace our soiled household products like pillows and small mattresses but are unable to do so because there isn’t an effective solid waste management disposal system, as practised for example in Australia, in place yet.

If we throw these items away, the normal domestic garbage collectors won’t take them, and that is why we can see many illegal dump sites that eventually become breeding grounds for the Aedes mosquito. So, to kill two birds with one stone, we need to seriously address the need for a solid waste management disposal system.

Last but not least, politicians on both sides of the divide, please don’t challenge each other on who is erring more. To err is very human but please don’t make it into a competition. We, the rakyat, are in the same boat with you and we don’t want to sink; just listen to your conscience. HOPE Shah Alam
