Dr Mahathir: I’ll see if there’s a vote of no confidence. I’ll see if PAS supports me.
PM not losing sleep over PAS support for now
KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad is taking the wait-and-see approach on allegations by PAS that “something is brewing” within the Pakatan Harapan coalition.
“I will wait and see if there is a vote of no confidence.
“I will see if PAS will support me or not,” he said after visiting the Defence Ministry here yesterday.
Dr Mahathir was responding to PAS which had pledged its support to him in the event of a betrayal from within Pakatan.
PAS secretary-general Datuk Takiyuddin Hassan alleged that the betrayal could come from two component parties within Pakatan but declined to reveal which.
Yesterday, PAS denied that its support for Dr Mahathir was a ploy for it to wriggle itself out of the investigations by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC).
Takiyuddin said the party was not trying to save itself from the allegations and was just giving its full cooperation.
“Our support for the Prime Minister is without any underly- ing motive, but for the interest of the country.
“Our supporting his leadership has nothing to do with ‘saving’ PAS from the investigations on the RM90mil. This is because we have given full cooperation to MACC,” said Takiyuddin in a statement.
Meanwhile, Foreign Minister Datuk Saifuddin Abdullah dismissed allegations that Pakatan was planning on a no-confidence vote against Dr Mahathir.
Saifuddin, who is Pakatan secretary-general, said the relationship between Pakatan and Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia remained “steady”.
“We do not question Dr Mahathir’s leadership because he is our Prime Minister who has vast experience in politics,” he said after the launch of the new International School of Kuala Lumpur campus here.
Earlier this week, blogger Mujahidin Zulkiffli also alleged that a plot was being hatched from within Pakatan against Dr Mahathir via a vote of no confidence.
However, Bersatu president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said he was confident that “Pakatan allies are still backing Dr Mahathir” despite claims he had lost support from PKR and DAP.
