Over 800 early voters will start picking their Semenyih rep

-

SEMENYIH: After nearly 10 days of ceramah, 858 people will be making their choice today on who they want as their elected representative for the Semenyih state seat.

They are the early voters in the constituency who will cast their votes from 8am to 5pm.

Another 93 had already carried out their rights via post.

Election Commission (EC) chairman Azhar Azizan Harun said the early voters were personnel of the 4th Battalion of the General Operations Force and their spouses.

He said 761 of them would cast their votes at the camp multipurpose hall while another 97 would cast theirs at the Kajang District Police Headquarters.

“Agents of the candidates will be around to observe the process.

“There will also be representatives from NGOs,” he said yesterday.

Azhar said the EC would be airing the early voting process live on Facebook.

He also clarified that the ballot papers for the early voters would not be tabulated at the polling centres but would be kept at the police station.

“The boxes will be brought to the vote-tallying centre on March 2 to be tabulated in the presence of the candidates’ agents,” he said.

Kajang Deputy OCPD Supt Mohd Sabri Abdullah meanwhile said 28 reports had been lodged since nomination day on Feb 16.

Supt Mohd Sabri also said two of the cases were being investigated under Section 427 of the Penal Code for mischief.

“One case involves two banners of a candidate that were cut up in Taman Semenyih while another involves the car of a candidate’s assistant that was splashed with blue paint.

“In general, the by-election has been smooth,” he said but reminded the contesting parties to abide by the Election Offences Act 1954 and ensure their supporters behave and follow police instructions.
