Accused in MRT robbery claims trial to charges
An air conditioner repairman was slapped with several charges including robbing and assaulting a woman at an MRT station in Cheras on Feb 14.
G. Thinathayaalan, 25, stood barefoot in the dock at a Sessions Court here as the charge was read out to him before judge Mahyon Talib.
He is accused of voluntarily causing hurt to 48-year-old bank manager Lee Meei Shan during the robbery with intention to take her identification card, driver’s licence, bank cards and RM400 in cash.
The offence was allegedly committed inside the lift at MRT Taman Mutiara, Cheras, at 6.45am on Feb 14. He claimed trial.
The accused faces imprisonment of up to 20 years and can be whipped if convicted. DPP N. Joy Jothi did not offer bail. “This case went viral. It happened in a lift at an MRT station and there was a recording.
“What happened was very cruel,” she told the court here yesterday.
Mahyon did not grant bail and fixed the case for mention on March 15.
The accused was unrepresented.
At another separate Sessions Court, Thinathayaalan was charged with armed robbery that allegedly took place just 15 minutes before the robbery at the MRT station.
He was accused of committing armed robbery on a Bangladeshi, Hossain Mobarok, and ran off with eight packs of cigarettes.
The offence was allegedly committed at Kedai KK Mart, Taman Tayton View, at 6.30am.
He pleaded not guilty before Sessions Court judge Emilia Kaswati Mohamad Khalid.
The charge under Section 392/397 of the Penal Code carries imprisonment up to 20 years, a fine and whipping.
The court also did not allow bail and fixed March 18 for mention.
DPP Siti Aisyah Ahmad appeared for the prosecution.
At a third Sessions Court, Thinathayaalan claimed trial before judge Rohatul Akmar Abdullah to a charge of voluntarily causing hurt to an Indonesian woman during a robbery on Feb 10.
He allegedly committed the offence against cleaner Miftahul Jannah, 29, in a rented room in Jalan Manis, Taman Segar, Cheras at 6.40am.
DPP Kamarul Aris Kamaluddin prosecuted. April 1 was fixed for mention.
