GEORGE TOWN: A 3,300sq ft transit centre will soon be built in Jalan C.Y. Choy here to provide shelter for the homeless.

Penang Island City Council (MBPP) mayor Datuk Yew Tung Seang said the design and proposal for the building were already completed, adding that they hoped the centre would be ready as soon as possible.

“We hope to get the centre ready soon so that we can provide a place for the homeless people in the city.

“The cost of the centre will be borne by MBPP together with the Penang state government and parties from the private sector.

“The project will be executed as a form of CSR (corporate social responsibility). Consultants from the private sector have helped design the centre and call for tender,” he said after a council meeting at City Hall on Wednesday.

Yew said they were aiming to make the Homeless Transit Centre the first three net zero building in Penang.

“We are planning to showcase this as our first three net zero project, which covers three aspects – zero waste, zero water and zero energy.

“As we are striving to achieve low carbon city status, we are aiming to have a net zero building.

“We are also trying to achieve the Global Peace Index (GPI) for the project,” he said.

It was previously reported that Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow, at the state assembly meeting in November last year (2018), announced that the state would spend RM560,000 to turn a pre-war house at 19, Jalan C.Y. Choy into the Penang island Homeless Transit Centre.
