Sabah courses in the world spotlight
TOURISM Malaysia is looking forward to hosting a sizable number of players from around the globe when the World Amateur Golfers Championship finale is held in Sabah in October.
This was expressed by Tourism Malaysia chairman Datuk Ahmad Shah Hussein Tambakau after issuing a joint statement in Kota Kinabalu with Delta Trend Golf & Leisure Holidays Sdn Bhd, the event’s organisers.
“Tourism Malaysia is pleased to support the World Amateur Golfers Championship,” said Ahmad Shah. “And we are keen to promote Malaysia as a golfing paradise with world-class facilities and value-formoney destinations.
“We look forward to welcoming the competing teams to Malaysia and hope to win them over with our Malaysian hospitality and charm, as well as beautiful golfing destinations,” he added.
This year’s World Amateur
Golfers Championship (WAGC) will be played at four of Sabah’s leading courses - Sutera Harbour Marina Golf & Country Club, Sabah Golf & Country Club, Nexus Golf Resort Karambunai and Dalit Bay Golf &
Country Club.
Golfers contesting in the WAGC world final represent their countries after qualifying as winners of their national tournaments.
The World Amateur Golfers Invitational (WAGI), a tournament run concurrently with the World Amateur Golfers Championship for invited guests, business leaders and corporate sponsors, will also feature prominently in October.
Delta Trend Golf & Leisure Holidays is the official partner and licensee for Malaysia. It organises both the qualifying rounds and national tournament, and this will be the eighth consecutive year that it has done so.
The 2019 world final will be the third held in Malaysia, following the successes of 2017 and 2018.
Mexico will host the WAGC world final next year and Delta Trend will again be sending Malaysia representatives there.
Malaysian teams were crowned world champions in 2012 and 2015, and were twice runners-up in 2016 and last year.
Vietnam were overall team champions in 2017 and 2018, and will be chasing a hat-trick this year.
Malaysia’s success in the WAGC has largely been made possible through the support of title sponsors Perodua and several government agencies, with Tourism Malaysia playing a leading role in ensuring the smooth running of the event.
The WAGC offers an opportunity for amateur golfers, golf courses, suppliers and corporations to come together to promote the game and foster fellowship among the golf fraternity, both nationally and internationally.
Hosting the WAGC world final here will bring together teams from over 40 countries.
