Enthusiasts from all over the world ‘go fly kite’ JOHOR BARU:
The phrase “go fly kite” has a different meaning for enthusiasts who took part in the 24th Pasir Gudang World Kite Festival 2019.
Participants came from all over the world to showcase their colourful kites in the five-day event.
Among them is Welsh Derek Kuhn, who is flying his triangle kite known as vlag, that can go up to 100m in the air.
“What makes it unique is that people can see it from far away as compared to a normal kite that is tethered to a string,” said the 53-year-old.
However, it is not all about flying kites for Kuhn as he has also fallen in love with the warmth of Malaysia.
“Growing up in a cold country has made me fall in love with Pasir Gudang, not only for the kite festival but the warmth as well.
“In winter, the temperature back home can drop to as low as 5ºC but over here, there are only dry and wet seasons,” said Kuhn, who first

came to Pasir Gudang eight years ago.
Enthusiast Chang Loo Hin, 65, grabbed the highlight at the festival with his kites, which were made in the shape of the extinct marine animal trilobite.
Pasir Gudang Municipal Council president Zainor Adani said this year, the festival featured kites from many countries, including Colombia, United Arab Emirates, Bulgaria, Hungary and Venezuela.
