Felda coach admits win over PJ City due to players’ own tactics

PETALING JAYA: Felda United coach Nidzam Jamil has hailed his players for charting their own success story against Petaling Jaya City.

Nidzam said his team’s first victory in the Super League season – a 1-0 win over PJ City at the Tun Abdul Razak Stadium in Jengka, Pahang, on Saturday – was a result of his players’ own ideas and tactics.

He admitted he was at his wit’s end trying to come up with a game plan to stop PJ City, known for playing three solid centrebacks, packing the midfield and relying on quick counter-attacks to score.

Fortunately for Nidzam, his players had some ideas and tricks of their own on how to deal with the Phoenix.

“I’m not ashamed to say that the players were behind the team’s tactics against PJ City. I listened to them as they all had good ideas to break down a pretty resolute PJ City,” said Nidzam.

“I’ve always been open to ideas. I can’t be rigid when it comes to tactics. Players like (Kei) Ikeda and (Masaki) Watanabe are our pillars when it comes to tactics and experience.

“I’m actually learning from some of these players. The Japanese and Brazilians have vast experience and as a coach, I want to absorb their knowledge.”

Nidzam praised former Sagan Tosu striker Ikeda and holding midfielder Jasazrin Jamaluddin for steadying the Felda ship.

“Ikeda has finally found his touch and his leadership is beginning to show. He understands the Malaysian culture, which is good for the team’s development,” he said.

“Jasazrin is showing his pedigree as a former Super League champion. At the age of 33, he’s cool enough to handle the pressure in the middle of the pitch.

“Their experience is vital for the young players. I’m happy how things are panning out for the team,” added Nidzam.

He believes better things are in store for the club in the league.

“We used to have top players, but it’s different now. The rebuilding will take time, and we must trust the process. We’ve to rely on each other to do well in the league,” he added.
