Hot days mean durian galore
Bumper crop expected due to dry season
BALIK PULAU: There is great news for durian lovers – a bumper crop is expected here this year with the hot weather.
Although the proper durian season has yet to start, there are already plenty of King of Fruits on offer in the state.
Wholesaler Tan Chee Keat, 28, said the durian season would likely peak between May and August.
“The last harvesting period started from December to January, April to June, and July to August. And again in November with a small crop.
“Durian trees need dry and hot weather to fully bloom. It is going to be a long season at my farm!” said Tan, who won first prize for his Raja Kunyit variety at the Durian King Competition 2013 in George Town.
Fruit seller Aindinadha Abd Rahman, 35, said business was good last week when they held a cheap sale promotion along Jalan Bayan Lepas.
The most sought-after varieties included the D-24 and Musang King.
“We sell all kinds of fruits, such as rambutans, cempedak, jackfruits, mangoes, mangosteens, papayas and grapes,” he said at his roadside stall yesterday.
Aindinadha, who has been selling fruits for about 10 years, said most of his durians were brought in from other states.
Spotted buying fruits at the stall was Rohazar Nayan, 62, who lives nearby in Batu Maung.
“The fruits here are fresh and most importantly, priced reasonably,” the retiree said.
Her daughter Nur Shamsurin Husin said she came to know about the stall on social media.
“I read it on Facebook and the posting was shared by many people,” the 24-year-old said.
