‘Keep TAR UC politics-free’
Wee: Education is the bigger agenda and more important
KUALA LUMPUR: MCA president Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong voiced his commitment for Tunku Abdul Rahman University College (TAR UC) to remain apolitical and refused to take questions on politics while at the institution.
“Our direction for TAR UC is clear, we will make this institution apolitical. We know we have a bigger agenda, education is more important.
“I will not talk about politics in this college,” said Dr Wee, who is also chairman of the TARC education foundation board of trustees.
Dr Wee made the comment at the launch of the “TARC Historical Series 2 – The Pioneers”, a book detailing the history of TARC, at the main campus here yesterday.
Produced by the Federation of TAR College Alumni Associations Malaysia, the book records the memories of four TAR founding members – former MCA presidents Tan Sri Datuk Lee San Choon and Tun Dr Ling Liong Sik, TARC first deputy registrar Tan Chang Soong, and former principal Datuk Dr Lim Khaik Leang – about the formation of TARC.
The book launch coincides with the varsity’s 50th anniversary celebration.
Dr Wee said as the institution looks forward to the next 50 years, it will continue its duty to provide affordable education for all.
“Our vision is super clear, we want to make it very professional and run by experts, our duty (as MCA) are just as custodians to make sure we maintain the ethos of TAR UC,” he said.
The Ayer Hitam MP said TAR UC and Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR) must also have discussions about their focus of different areas of expertise.
“There must be some coordination between UTAR and TAR UC, we do not want these two brothers to be competitors,” he said, adding that his vision for TAR UC is to produce more technocrats and provide on-the-job training.
Also present at the launch was former MCA president Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai.
